The Role At Treewalk, you'll run the day-to-day finance engine for the Indigenous governments, organizations and businesses we serve: clean books, a disciplined month-end close, timely funder reporting and year-end files that sail through audit. You'll own a portfolio of clients, acting as their fractional controller. Some will lean on you to keep operations running smoothly month to month; others will need you to get a backlog cleaned up and audit-ready. Either way, every file is yours to run. Deadlines are real; overtime isn't a lifestyle. We staff sensibly, treat extra hours as the rare exception, and back that up with true schedule autonomy and remote flexibility, so your evenings stay yours. If you've managed controllership or audit-prep engagements at a small- to mid-size firm, or run finance operations inside a First Nation, Tribal Council or Indigenous organization, and you're ready for high-impact work, tangible ownership and genuine balance, then we would love to hear from you. How You'll Create Impact Day-to-Day - Run a disciplined close – Lead month-end and year-end close across your portfolio: reconciliations, accruals, deferred revenue, capital assets and journal entries, on time and review-ready. - Keep operations humming – Oversee AP, AR, payroll and cash management processes, and step in hands-on when a client needs a fractional controller's precision and speed. - Make audits painless – Build year-end audit files and lead schedules, prep airtight support, clear PBC lists and quarterback conversations with external auditors so leadership can sleep at night. - Get the hard files back on track – Clean up backlogs and prior-year issues, so clients go from catch-up mode to a clean, audit-ready position. - Run the engine of multi-entity groups – Keep the books straight across Nations' governments, economic development corporations, limited partnerships, trusts and societies, including intercompany and fund accounting. - Keep funding on track – Track funding by program, manage deferred and restricted funds, and prepare reporting for ISC, CIRNAC, FNHA and other funders. - Build strong controls – Design practical processes, internal controls and financial policies that hold up to auditor and funder scrutiny. - Grow the team – Coach and review the work of accountants, bookkeepers and CPA students, and build checklists and templates that scale across clients. Result: clients see you as the calm, trusted voice who keeps their books clean, their funders satisfied and their audits uneventful, while you build deep, meaningful expertise without the grind of traditional public practice. Requirements Our ideal candidate... • CPA designation required. - Significant experience in controllership, month-end close and year-end audit preparation, ideally with Indigenous governments, organizations or not-for-profits. - Strong working knowledge of PSAS / ASNPO, fund accounting and funding agreement reporting. - Experience leading engagements and supervising staff. - A respectful, relationship-based approach and an understanding of Indigenous histories, governance and the impacts of colonization. - After the base experience requirements are met, we hire first and foremost strong analytical thinkers and problem solvers. Please mention these bonus skills if you have them - Audit experience at a firm serving First Nations or public-sector clients - Cloud accounting and payroll systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage, Xero) - FMB Financial Administration Law or certification experience - Lived experience as a First Nations, Métis or Inuit person, or connection to Indigenous communities Benefits Why Treewalk Feels Different It's Treewalk for a reason: we invest in your growth, trust your judgment, and protect your life outside the ledger. - No-Strings Learning Fund – We pay 100% of your CPA modules, annual dues, and any pro-dev courses you choose, and we'll never claw it back if you move on. - Freedom Over Face-Time – Own your deadlines, shape your schedule. Hit a midday workout, do the school run; just bring the results. - Day-One Peace of Mind – Extended health, dental, vision, and parental-leave benefits start the moment you join. Who We Are Treewalk is Vancouver-born and scaling nationwide. Our Indigenous Services group runs the finance operations of Nations and Indigenous organizations and gets them audit-ready, so leadership can focus on their community's goals while we keep the numbers strong. But labels like "accounting firm" don't capture our DNA. Picture a tech startup powered by CPAs: - Holacracy over hierarchy – Ideas outrank titles, and ownership lives on every desk. - Relationships first – We earn trust over the long term and work in a way that respects each community's priorities and protocols. - Growth at warp speed – One of Canada's fastest-rising advisory practices, we set audacious goals, then sprint past them. - Training ground for tomorrow's leaders – Whether you're two years post-designation or a seasoned finance lead, Treewalk is where accountants level up. The Values That Power Us Mastery: We hunt knowledge relentlessly and build expertise into every engagement. Support: No one goes it alone; collaboration is our default setting. Ownership: We celebrate wins and own slip-ups with equal conviction. Kaizen: Continuous improvement isn't a buzzword; it's our daily operating system.
