Volvo Construction Equipment Technology – Eskilstuna Come join us in developing the next-generation software platform for Volvo Construction Equipment's machine ECUs! About the Role As an Embedded Developer, you will work at the very heart of our machines. You will design, implement, and verify hardware-centric real-time software for our proprietary ECUs (Electronic Control Units). Functional Safety is an integral part of our development, and we combine rigorous engineering practices with modern software design. You will join an agile team that values clean code, modern toolchains, and technical excellence. As we develop our next-generation software platform, you will have the opportunity to influence its architecture, technical direction, and engineering practices. We value engineers who take ownership, challenge existing solutions, and contribute to sound technical decisions. The scope of your responsibilities and technical ownership will reflect your experience and strengths, with opportunities to grow and take on greater responsibility over time. Your Main Responsibilities Design and development of embedded real-time software using Modern C++20, targeting RTOS and bare-metal environments. Contributing to software architecture and technical solutions, balancing performance, maintainability, and real-time constraints. Developing software in accordance with Functional Safety requirements, including standards such as ISO 13849 (PLd) and IEC 61508. Developing and maintaining a modern, deterministic build environment based on CMake. Ensuring software quality through static analysis, unit testing, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, including high test coverage requirements such as MC/DC. Who Are You? We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about embedded systems and enjoys solving complex technical challenges at the intersection of software and hardware. We particularly value engineers who bring deep technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to influence technical solutions. At the same time, we recognize that strong engineering talent comes with different levels of experience, and we welcome candidates with a solid technical foundation and the potential to grow. What matters most is your technical curiosity, problem-solving ability, and commitment to building high-quality software. What You Bring A solid foundation in C++ programming, gained through professional experience, education, or substantial technical projects. Understanding of software engineering principles and an interest in embedded systems, real-time constraints, and microcontrollers. Experience using Python for scripting, automation, testing, or software development. The ability to analyze technical problems, take initiative, and collaborate effectively with others. Fluency in English, both written and spoken. Swedish is a plus. Experience We Particularly Value Embedded real-time software development using RTOS or bare-metal architectures, including memory management and deterministic execution. Modern C++ design, including C++20 and modern design principles. Communication networks and diagnostic protocols such as CAN / CAN FD, J1939, and UDS (ISO 14229). Functional Safety development according to standards such as ISO 13849, ISO 26262, or IEC 61508. Development tooling involving CMake, XML-based configurations, code generation, and Python-based automation. Software verification using static analysis, unit testing, HIL, and structural code coverage. Experience making architectural decisions, driving technical improvements, or guiding other developers. You don't need to have experience in all these areas. We are interested in the expertise you bring, your ability to solve challenging problems, and your motivation to develop further. Additional Merits Model-based design or control theory, such as filters and regulators. Configuration and setup of traceable build environments using CMake Presets. Experience with safety-critical hardware features, such as memory protection units (MPU/XRDC) or hardware diagnostics. What We Value Pragmatism over dogma. Solutions should work in real-life contexts. Collaboration and dialogue over top-down control. The best solutions come from combining different perspectives and experiences. Technical ownership and sound engineering judgment. We value people who take responsibility and think beyond their immediate tasks. Continuous improvement, learning, and knowledge sharing. We grow stronger by developing both our technology and each other. With us, you will get: Real influence on our next-generation software platform, with opportunities to shape architecture, make important technical decisions, and establish engineering practices that will influence Volvo CE's software development for years to come. A technically advanced environment working with modern C++20, safety-critical systems, real-time software, and modern development and verification tools. Long-term technical ownership, developing and evolving software that serves multiple machine platforms and product generations. End-to-end involvement, from architecture and implementation to testing and validation on real hardware and machines. A collaborative engineering culture where technical expertise, open dialogue, and knowledge sharing are highly valued. The opportunity to work with skilled colleagues and domain experts in embedded systems, functional safety, control systems, and machine applications. Opportunities to continuously develop your skills, explore new technologies, and contribute to improving our ways of working. A healthy work-life balance with flexible ways of working and a sustainable pace. A stable and long-term employer with a clear focus on technology, innovation, and sustainable development. The satisfaction of seeing your software move tons of steel, enabling safer, smarter, and more sustainable construction equipment used around the world. Last day to apply: 3 November For questions about the position, please contact: Johan Lokrantz, Head of Embedded Software Location: Eskilstuna, Headquarters, Technology Center As part of the recruitment process, a background check as well as alcohol and drug testing may be conducted.
