Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, including direct work on real-time trading systems or research platforms.
- Expert-level Python skills, including large-scale data processing with NumPy, Pandas, Polars, PyTorch, or similar tools.
- Working proficiency in C++ for performance-sensitive components.
- Hands-on experience with very large datasets, including time-series databases such as InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, or kdb+/q, and columnar formats or engines such as Parquet, DuckDB, or ClickHouse, or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or Datadog.
- Advanced, hands-on use of LLM coding tools and agents as a core part of your development workflow, with a clear understanding of their limitations.
- Understanding of futures and FX market data conventions and market microstructure is strongly preferred.
- Experience with systematic trading or quantitative research workflows is strongly preferred.
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical projects is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and containerization tools such as Docker or Kubernetes, is strongly preferred.
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Pulumi is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Own the real-time systems that deliver live market data to our models and send model target positions to our position management system.
- Extend and maintain connectors for live market data, including high-volume exchange feeds in NY4, broker connections, and vendor APIs such as Bloomberg and LSEG.
- Maintain and improve C++ components on latency- and throughput-sensitive paths.
- Build and optimize pipelines to process, clean, and validate tick-level and aggregated historical futures and FX data, as well as related reference data such as contract specifications, roll schedules, and trading calendars.
- Design data models, storage, and query APIs for large market-data volumes, with a focus on query performance, data integrity, and cost efficiency.
- Develop Python tools and libraries that accelerate and improve the reproducibility of research, model evaluation, and backtesting, using shared code and data paths so strategies behave consistently in backtests and live trading.
- Partner with our investment team to translate complex, loosely defined research needs into durable technical solutions.
- Improve the reliability, observability, and testability of research and production systems, including monitoring, alerting, and logging for each market data feed and trading system.
- Diagnose complex issues across the research-to-production lifecycle and implement fixes that address their root causes.
- Establish standards for testing, code review, and production readiness, including simulation and replay testing before changes reach live trading.
- Make pragmatic architecture and build-versus-buy decisions for our platform, and establish engineering practices for a future development team.

More
We are HLS Trading, a systematic macro fund with offices in Miami, Florida, and Greenwich, Connecticut. Launched in 2026, we operate with a deliberately small team where everyone contributes directly to the business. Our Senior Developer will own and advance the platform behind our trading and research. Core systems are already in place, including position management for order generation, routing, and pre-trade risk controls, along with colocated market data infrastructure in NY4; the focus is on extending, strengthening, and improving these systems rather than starting from scratch. Our stack is primarily Python, with C++ for performance-sensitive components. A dedicated team member handles cloud infrastructure and CI/CD, so this role centers on the trading and research platform. There are no direct reports at present, though we expect the role to lead a development team as we grow. This is a hybrid position based in either our Miami or Greenwich office, with three days each week in the office. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on any basis protected by law.
