Network Security Engineer

Requirements:

• Valid drivers license and a safe driving history that meets National Grids Safe Driver policy
• Proficiency with Visio
• Strong work ethic, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and follow through promptly
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, contribute expertise to a team, and follow leadership direction
• Ability to lead work efforts and coordinate resources across teams and functions
• Availability to travel by vehicle approximately 25% monthly and participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support for hardware, applications, operating systems, software, and related infrastructure
• Provision, install, configure, operate, and maintain systems and ensure they meet organizational standards and security requirements
• Support remote sites, including data centers, and provide hands-on assistance with infrastructure and network equipment
• Manage enterprise firewalls, including creating rules, reviewing policies, and applying security hardening
• Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot routing and switching infrastructure across multiple sites
• Administer and optimize application delivery and traffic-balancing platforms to support availability and performance
• Assess network vulnerabilities and conduct port scans to identify and address security risks
• Oversee centralized log collection, monitoring, and alerting to support operational visibility and incident response
• Maintain and report on timely security patching for network firewalls, routers, switches, applications, and related appliances
• Manage secure network backups, including automated configurations, validation, recovery, and participation in disaster recovery exercises
• Install and rack equipment, upgrade IOS on new equipment, and support network backups, syslog, and monitoring systems
• Monitor systems daily, verify hardware and server resource availability, review logs, and confirm scheduled jobs such as backups are completed
• Report on hardware performance to support capacity planning
• Investigate and resolve infrastructure issues and outages promptly
• Work with vendors to support compliance activities and resolve appliance and server hardware or software issues
• Follow NERC CIP Standards and meet time-sensitive deadlines
• Provide application and hardware support during the on-call rotation

We are recruiting for a Network Security Engineer on a one-year contract-to-hire basis, with the opportunity for full-time employment. The position is based in Northborough, Massachusetts, and lists an hourly range of $70–$80. The role includes monthly vehicle travel and on-call coverage.
